Jumpers4goalposts (j4g) has been online since 2002, although my collection started way back in the 80’s. One of the first shirt’s in my collection was the 1988/89 Napoli home shirt. The shirt is a replica that was originally owned by my father who wore it often to show his support for our home side. The shirt has many memories for me, it reminds me of my dad, of Italy and Napoli. It reminds me of my favourite player; Maradona and the glory he bought to Napoli. So many memories from one shirt…
The idea for the website was conceived after many long afternoons in the office spent reminiscing over the glory days of great clubs and past legends. Being a ‘shirt aficionado’, I would naturally drop knowledge, and every now-and-then would show the guys shirts from my collection. Seeing these classic shirts would start even more ‘…ah, do you remember when…’ and eventually ended with the suggestion that I put my collection online for others to admire – and jumpers4goalposts was born. The aim had always been to create a site that displayed my shirt collection, but also as a point of reference for other shirt collectors and football fans. As the website grew, we invited collectors to display their collections. These can be seen in the archive, where we have visual contributions from all over the world, as fans are keen to represent. (We are always looking for new additions so please contact us if you have a rare shirt, and will even assist in professionally photographing it.)
My collection continued to grow steadily, taking in a whole variety of shirts, as long as they were vintage, however due to other commitments, I was forced to down-size and sell off a few items, and thus more recently the ‘for sale’ section was added to the website. Every item for sale on the website (bar a handful of private sale items) has been in my own personal collection. Each shirt is special in its own way and each one has a story to tell. We have gone to painstaking lengths to describe each shirt and photograph it in detail, so that when you add it to your collection, you will be satisfied.
The website was never the work of one person alone, whilst I designed and created the visual, there was a lot of input, support and encouragement from football fans, fellow collectors, friends and family. It has been a labour of love- a challenge which at times I thought I would never see complete. A lot of thought has gone into every detail from layout to fonts and colours and style, in short I wanted to offer a website that I myself would want to use. One person who single-handedly helped take the website to a new level was a good buddy of mine, Paul. The website you have in front of you works smoothly because of his knowledge and commitment, without it there is no question of a doubt; there wouldn’t be a website – thanks mate.
